ORIGINALITY OF A WEBSITE?

If you can see, most of the website out there actually look almost the same, and don't be surprise because some of it have almost the same features in it. One of the reason for this is because that there is a few website is designed by a same designer. So the style and art direction of it could be almost the same. But for some of it, the website look almost the same but it is created by two different designer. And you know for sure there is something wrong with it, something called PLAGIARISM. Even in this industry there will be people trying to plagiarist others work and idea.

After Facebook started to be known by the society, there are rumors saying that FACEBOOK isn't actually the idea of  Mark Zuckerburg himself but he stole the idea from his Harvard classmates and founders of ConnectU. But this is just a rumors, whether its legit statement or not, only Mark himself knows. If the statement is true, even a famous website steals someone else idea, so we don't have to surprise if those smaller  website steals some other website idea for it.

There is also rumors saying that facebook isn't the only famous website that is stealing someone else idea but there is also a few more site that does the same thing before they became famous. Some of it are,

  • Twitter
  • Hulu
  • PayPal

WHY WANT IT TO STAY SIMPLE?

From previous post I've talk about how everyone can build their own website now. Every web design is one of the most important factor that need to be focus on. When you create a website using a third party site, there is going to be a limit when it comes to the design of it, where you can't control much about the design of it. Why I said manually creating your website is better than creating it using a third party source is because, when you manually type all the code by yourself, you can add more effect or special feature for your website. Whereas, I believe those online web builder won't have much of this feature. Maybe they will only going to have a few preset for you to choose and use it for your website.

The keyword here is YOUR WEBSITE. If it's your website, why you want the design and all
to follow as what they have prepare for you? It's your website, so you should have the power to design your website like how you wanted it to be. Here is why a professional skills and talents are required to build a website. But still, if you doesn't care much about the look of your website, as long as there is a website for you, with this kind of web builder site, it really can save you a lot of time and money. Why I said it save your money is because when you want to have a website, you need to pay a web designer just to build a website for you. And not just that, the website that you have paid to the designer to build can only control by them. Here is why the those website builder come in handy.

I'm not trying side on the traditional way of creating a website, for my opinion, I do agree that third party those we builder can be useful to some people, with this kind of thing, talents and skills can also be replaced by the technology.

ENTRY #9

ANYONE CAN BUILD A WEBSITE, BUT NOT EVERYONE CAN BE A GOOD WEB DESIGNER

Nowadays, there are millions of website appears online, thousands new websites are launched every single day. This is because creating a website isn't as difficult or complicated as we thought. Now, to build a website won't requires you to know much about coding, maybe if you didn't know anything about coding, still you will manage to create a website. All you need to have now to create a website is a good internet connection, that is it.
Why am I saying this is because, each day there are thousands of new website are launched, and out of those website, there is going to be few websites that provide you the service to build your own website. What I'm trying to say is that there are a lot of online website generator out there which is easier to use compared to the traditional method where you need to write out everything by using code.

The reason why peoples choose this way to create their website is because that with this kind of service, everyone can create and own a website by themselves. You will no longer need to pay a designer just to build a website for you. Plus with this, it won't take you days to make a website, just a few minutes then you can finish creating a website.

Let me show you what are the few websites that is providing the service of building a website for you.

ENTRY #8

CREATING A WEBSITE

Nothing is going to be easy when it required coding to make it fully functional. When it comes to building a website, it requires coding in it. Its either a lot of coding or just some simple one. But for sure there is going to be coding in it. So it won't be that easy to build one fully functional website.

HTML/CSS coding

There are numerous process that need to be done when building a fully functional website. From idea brainstorming, to the creation of your website and finally to the maintenance stage where the designer need to keep their website up to date and current.

The exact process will vary slightly from a designer to a designer. But overall, the basics of building a website are still going to be the same. Like for me, I like to practice using 6 simple phase when building a website. It is easier to do when you have a plan for it.

The 6 phase that I've mention above is
  1. Information gathering / brainstorming
  2. Planning
  3. Design
  4. Development
  5. User testing
  6. Maintenance
PHASE 1 :Brainstorming
The first phase when it comes to building a website is to gather all of the information regarding about the website that you going to create. Many things need to be taken in consideration when the look and feel of your website is created.

The first phase is the most important part of creating a website. Without a good start, there won't be a good ending. Other than that, there will be a lot of answers that need to be found which are related to the clients before we even start creating a website for them. We can't be designing the website based on our preference, we need to always remind our self that the clients is the one that is hiring us to create it them, not us.
"Good web design is about the character of the content, not the character of the designer" -Jeffrey Zeldman
There are certain things that need to be consider are:

  • PURPOSE
What is the purpose of the website? is it used to sell a product, as an informative site, or used as a service provider through the web‏
  • GOAL
What is the main target for the website? Most of the common goal for every websites is either to make money out of it or to share information
  • TARGET AUDIENCE
Is there any specific groups of people that you need to help you reaching your goal? Teenagers? Adults? Male? Female..?
  • CONTENT
What is the thing that is going to be in your website? It is better if you can think of what the user is going to be looking for in your website

PHASE 2 :Planning
From all of the information that you have gathered from phase one, put all of them together and start planning for your website. This is where you as web designer need to prepare a mood board / site map.

The purpose of the mood board is to guide the designer on what is the list of things that they will be using in the process of the website making, such as, what is the main topic and sub-topic for it?

PHASE 3 :Design
From the information that you gathered up to this point, it is time to determine the look and feel for the website. One of the main factor that is going to be focus on is the target audiences. Different groups of people have different preference. For an example, some of the guys won't be visiting a 'girly' theme website or an old man won't be visiting a gaming site. Because of that, target audience are one of the main factor for designing your web interface.

The next thing you need decide is which software you will be using during the process of creating this website, some of the software that is commonly use in the web design industry is either Photoshop or Adobe Illustrator (AI). Other than that, you need to be sure that the image or information is clearly visible for the user. It is easy if you make a template for your website so that you won't keep changing style during the process of designing the website.

After all, the overall design for your website is very important. A good user interface creates an easier way to navigate the website. For my opinion, simple design is the best design.

PHASE 4 :Development
After you have decided on what to do in the planning and designing phase, you can start working on creating the website. Here is when the coding comes into play. In this phase, the designer need mastered on how to code.

For some of people out there that thought creating a website is an easy job, it is not. It happens to me once where I thought it is an easy job for creating a website until I experience it myself,  I have never been so wrong.

On the technical front, during the process of creating a website, the designer are required to understand the front-end of web development. This involves writing certain valid code such as HTML, CSS(Cascading Style Sheets),  JAVASCRIPT,  JS QUERY that complies to current web standard.

This is tested on the next phase...

PHASE 5 :User testing
At this point, the web designer will attend to the final details and test the website, where they need to check to be sure that all of the code written for their website validates  and see if there is any bug or malfunction for the website.

PHASE 6 :Maintenance
The development of the website is not over, yet. The designer still need to make sure that the website is up to date so that the user/visitor won't get bored from visiting the website.

ENTRY #7

After my consultation with the lecturer, Daniel, he said that I'm going a bit off track for this project.

Based on my past few entries, Daniel stated that it was a bit too broad as I focused on a few hundred years back.  He said that I should focus more on the things or topics which are related to my projects and practices.

So after a discussion that I had with him, I've decided to go with something that I've been doing in my project which is to create a fully functional website.

ENTRY #6

Technology is slowly replacing talents and skills ??

Its already 21st Century now! It's impossible to say that most of the talents and skills are still carried out by the human. Some people still not agree that the talents and skills are being replaced by technology, but the truth is, technologies are slowly replacing the talents and skills since two centuries back when the transportation technology, vehicles was invented. Other than that, do you guys still remember the famous robot which is invented by HONDA called 'ASIMO'

The reason they invented this robot is to be a multi-functional mobile assistant. And it is proven that the talents and skills are starting to be replaced by technology. Year by year, technologies are getting more advanced. The country that are famous for inventing advance technologies are Japan and United State. The Japanese and the Americans never stop giving us suprises on their invention & inovations.

The Japanese has invented a robot that can actually sing and dance like a human. We don't need to spend too much time and effort teaching humans choreography and vocals when we have this kind of robot‏. Can you imagine the impact of this where it can actually replace the jobs for all those K-Pop star!

Jobs that human might lose to robots
As IBM's Watson proved on Jeopardy, robots are becoming smarter than people. They also make fewer mistakes and they don't get bored. The robots started to conquer many field in the industry, this include the machinery, music, military, space-based industry and even entertainment industry.
This picture is showing Jimmy Fallon( hosts The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, a late-night talk show that airs on NBC) is getting his face make up by a robot hand instead of a human
WORLD WAR II
During the World War II, the Soviet-Union has invented a Military Robots to replaced the soldier during the war. It is designed for attack their opponent during the war. One of this robot can already replace a few man power and save many life.

It is difficult to accept reality that technology has slowly replaced the talents and skills of a human, and bear in mind that 'they' are more good at it. There is even movies to show how is it going to be if the technology really replaced the human. In the year 2004, the Americans has made a movie about the future where all of the robots are actually a human assistant which they can do anything that a human assistant can do. A few years after that, they made another movie about the robot that actually replaced the human on their daily life. The real human only need to stay home and let their surrogate to do things for them.
I Robot (2004)

Surrogates (2009)
There are a few article that says about the possibility of human losing their jobs to the technology/robots

ENTRY #5

Is there any much originality can be found since the existence of Internet?

For my opinion, the originality has already being challenged not just by the internet, but it is even being challenged by the human.
Let's go back to the year around 19th century, when the modern art was born. During that year, there is already few artist/painter has started to imitate some other artist art style/artwork. Lets take a simple example, Giovanni Pietro Rizzoli, he is a talented painter who contributed substantially to the distribution of the late style of the creator for 'Mona Lisa' piainting, Leonardo Da Vinci. Giovanni has copied numerous masterpiece by Leonardo, as well as leaving behind numerous capable original composition of his own.

Giovanni famous artwork:-

The is still a few more famous painter artwork being reproduced over the past years

Even a well known painter, Pablo Picasso once said
"A good artist copy, a great artist steal"- Pablo Picasso
It means that if you want to have an artwork like that one person, it's either you steal it and present it before he does or don't do anything so that you can be the only person that has that artwork. In that case you will have the originality of that artwork. Don't ever copy it from him and present it after that, that isn't a professional way to produce an artwork. So by this, it's proven that ORIGINALITY has already being challenged way before the Internet was invented. Ever since technology was introduced, originality is becoming harder and harder to find, especially when there is INTERNET

Usually we will think that this kind of thing is only happened caused by the irresponsible society, but the truth is, even the industry people plagiarist some of other artist work. For an example, there is this Bollywood movie called ‘Awara Paagal Deewana’ that is famous for imitating a scene from a famous Hollywood movie called ‘The Matrix’. Surprisingly, they imitate the entire scene exactly the same as in the movie Matrix. Even the choreograph and the background of the scene are exactly the same.

Here is a short scene from the movie ‘Awara Paagal Deewana’

This kind of issues doesn't only happen in the movie industry, it also occurred in many other industries such as the Music, IT, Branding and many more.

ENTRY #4

Is it true that talents and skills are being replaced by technology?

Technology?
tech·nol·o·gy noun \tek-ˈnä-lə-jē\
: the use of science in industry, engineering, etc., to invent useful things or to solve problems

: a machine, piece of equipment, method, etc., that is created by technology
plural tech·nol·o·gies

There is many types of technologies that actually existed in our world. As we all know, when there is technology, there must be science behind it. So it means that technology is already existed many centuries back when the term SCIENCE is discovered. The first ever technology that has been discovered is the WHEEL. Wheel is also considered as a technology which it help humans to transport from one place to another place without using too much of energy. The first ever wheeled vehicles appears from the second half of the 4th millennium BC, near-simultaneously in Mesopotamia (Sumerian civilization). After that discovery, there is more technology has been invented such as the LIGHTING technology where it replaced the usage of candles and natural light to produced the light source.

Technology is getting more and more sophisticated by years. It started from helping the human needs and slowly turn to replacing the human, and I personally thinks that it isn't a good thing when it comes to REPLACING the human. It is actually a good thing for the invention of technology, it helps a lot in saving our time, energy, money and many more, but if the technology is going to do all of the thing, what is the rest of humans going to do?

Albert Einstein, the world most famous BRAINIAC once said

"I fear the day that technology will surpass our human interaction. The world will have a generation of idiots." - Albert Einstein

Please bear in mind, that the technology aren't the 'GOD' that can do anything. There is still PROS & CONS for it. We can't really expect that much from the technology. We must remember, without human, technologies can't be invented and technologies also has its limit.

Is the talents & skills being replaced by technology? From what I've found based on my research, SOME of the talents & skills are being replaced by the technology, but some still needed human for it. Technology is like an improvement in the human needs but it definitely won't replace the human.

ENTRY #3

ORIGINALITY?

What is originality?

o·rig·i·nal·i·ty
  (ə-rĭj′ə-năl′ĭ-tē)
n. pl. o·rig·i·nal·i·ties
1. The quality of being original.
2. The capacity to act or think independently.
3. Something original.

Originality of a thing can only be counted if it's a new creation that never been created by anyone else before except for the creator/inventor themselves. Some people likes to be a creator/inventor themselves but they use a shortcut way to be a creator which is by taking other people works and make some adjustment in it and then they claimed to be theirs. To them that is a originality but it isn't a originality of work but it is called as PLAGIARISM.

Choosing the right ONE

So after some consideration and research, I've make up my mind and decided to go with topic no.4 to elaborate.

There is a professional method that our lecturer has taught us to use which is way to identify our topic. It is also a good way to use and by this way, it will guide us to stay on track and stop beating around the bush so that we won't be wasting our time.

WHAT YOU NEED TO IDENTIFY :

a) Task word
b) Main topic
c) Subtopic/Related topic
d) Artifact/Platform/Expert thinker
e) Parameter/Limits
f) Keyword
g) Working title
h) Thesis/Opinion

Question:

What are your thoughts on the idea of originality is being challenged by
the internet? Do you agree or disagree that talents and skills are now being replaced by technology? Discuss the issue using your own projects and practice.

Identify:
a) Task word :Discuss the issue, Agree or disagree?
b) Main topic :The idea of originality is being challenged by the internet
